Let the People Click!
October 6, 2008
If you want to make money from advertising on your website, you would be well advised to actually allow people to click on ads!
I love Pandora. I use it every day to cue up my favorite music and discover new stuff that I like. Their website displays big ads that change at seemingly random intervals and/or mouseclicks on the page. Today, I saw an ad that I actually wanted to click on… an ad for the new 2009 Subaru WRX (I have special place in my heart for Subarus as it was my first car).
The ad showed the new car and also two buttons, one for Subaru Radio and one to see the “New 2009 Subaru WRX Video.” Wanting to check out the video, and not exactly sure what would happen when I clicked the link (popup to new site? video played within pandora?) I clicked pause on the Pandora player. THEN, the page reloaded and the ad was GONE, replaced by some other ad I had absolutely no interest in.
I tried reloading the page a couple times and clicking play/pause again to try to get the ad to come back (more than most people would probably do) with no luck.
I know what you’re thinking… well you’re just one person so they probably only lost like $0.10 for your click.
Maybe, but to me, this seems like a pretty big design flaw for a site that is trying to generate ad revenue. Which leads me to the Fort Worth Startup Blog Tip of the Day: If you’re trying to make money by advertising on your website, make sure people can click the ads!!!
